About us
The Tamar & Tavy Gig Club, founded in 2003, is based on the Devon bank of the river Tamar, at the Weir Quay. The gig club provides members with the opportunity to row and race.
Ginette is our Cornish Pilot racing gig, built for the club by Brain Nobbs from elm. The club also has a flash boat, rowing machines. Well advanced plans and finance are in place for a second gig in 2008. We continue to raise funds for its oars, cover , trailer etc.
The club operates on the water from March to the end of October, participating in regattas all over the West Country including the world pilot gig championships in the Isles of Scilly.
Over the winter a land based fitness programme is offered.
Rowing is divided into squads, men’s, ladies’, juniors/youth and veterans. Each squad covers a wide ability range including the highly competitive, semi-competitive and a development group. A cross-squad development group runs on a Monday and alternate Friday evenings in the summer months. Each squad has a training night and weekend sessions.
The river is tidal and a rowing schedule details training sessions. Each squad has an elected coordinator and two vice coordinators to organise squad rowing, this is over seen by a rowing captain.
The club is small but active and all members are expected to assist with the smooth running of the club. The club is lucky to have a great band of social members and supporters to cheer us on at regattas.

Rowing squads
The club has 4 squads
- Mens’ squad 16+
- Ladies’ squad 16+
- Veterans’ squad 40+
- Juniors’ squad -16
Each squad has an overall captain plus two vice captains, who are elected in accordance with procedures agreed by the rowing sub-committee. They are each responsible for running the rowing sessions.
Each squad has 3 sections covering 3 levels of ability and/or interest from competitive rowers through to recreational rowers. Tide and time permitting they all train on the same regular nights to allow fluid movement between levels. It is envisaged that these levels will be as follows:
- Competitive Section – open to all those who meet agreed fitness and rowing criteria and are available consistently for selection for competitive events;
- Competitive Section – open to all those who wish to row hard but can only put themselves forward occasionally for consideration for competitive events;
- Development Section – open to all those who want to row consistently and develop their skills as recreational rowers.
General rowing sessions are held on Monday morning, there is also a development/technique session on a Monday evening and a monthly all comers session is scheduled once a month after the junior/youth rowing on a Friday evening.. Additional general sessions may be held but must always have a named coordinator and be agreed by the rowing schedule organiser.
A regatta secretary is appointed to liaise with other clubs and organise regattas, and to delegate regatta duties e.g. preparing and towing the gig.
Any rowers can put themselves forward to be considered for a regatta crew selection according to the agreed selection processes.
Whilst there are sufficient competitive rowers, each rower should be limited to one row per regatta (plus heats if applicable) to maximise the number of rowers taking part. Selection for regattas will be made in accordance with the agreed club guidelines.
All rowers must read and sign the safety file and abide by club safety rules and regulations, which clarify responsibilities.
All rowers must sign up at each rowing session for the forthcoming session or let the squad captain know by e mail/telephone. This will enable all to be aware of who is expected at each session and facilitate scheduling of boats.
All rowers are expected to contribute time to overall club operation, to counteract any ‘row and go’ tendencies.
Squad captains, vice captains and coxes must provide briefings and feedback before and after squad sessions.
More rowers are needed to train as coxes so as to ensure availability of a variety of coxes.
All training sessions will be scheduled and circulated by e-mail to all rowers and the boat will only be used during these sessions.
A social secretary is appointed to organise social events for the club and bridge the gap between rowing and social members.
