About us

The Tamar & Tavy Gig Club, founded in 2003, is based on the Devon bank of the river Tamar, at the Weir Quay. The gig club provides members with the opportunity to row and race.

Ginette is our Cornish Pilot racing gig, built for the club by Brain Nobbs from elm. The club also has a flash boat, rowing machines. Well advanced plans and finance are in place for a second gig in 2008. We continue to raise funds for its oars, cover , trailer etc.

The club operates on the water from March to the end of October, participating in regattas all over the West Country including the world pilot gig championships in the Isles of Scilly.

Over the winter a land based fitness programme is offered.

Rowing is divided into squads, men’s, ladies’, juniors/youth and veterans. Each squad covers a wide ability range including the highly competitive, semi-competitive and a development group. A cross-squad development group runs on a Monday and alternate Friday evenings in the summer months. Each squad has a training night and weekend sessions.

The river is tidal and a rowing schedule details training sessions. Each squad has an elected coordinator and two vice coordinators to organise squad rowing, this is over seen by a rowing captain.

The club is small but active and all members are expected to assist with the smooth running of the club. The club is lucky to have a great band of social members and supporters to cheer us on at regattas.
